An alkaline diet is based on the idea that replacing acidic foods with alkaline foods can improve your health.

Proponents of the diet even think it may help fight serious diseases like cancer.

This article looks at the science behind an alkaline diet.

What is an alkaline diet?

Its premise is that your diet can change the pH value - measuring acidity or alkalinity - of your body.

Your metabolism and conversion of food into energy.

Both involve a chemical reaction that breaks a solid mass.

However, chemical reactions in your body occur slowly and in a controlled manner.

When everything is burned, and ash residue is left. Similarly, the foods you eat leave a residue of ash called metabolic waste.

This metabolic waste can be either alkaline, neutral or acid. Proponents of this diet claim that metabolic waste can directly affect the acidity of your body.

In other words, if you eat food that leaves acid ash, it makes your blood more acidic. If you eat food that leaves alkaline ashes, it makes your blood more alkaline.

According to the acid ash hypothesis, acid ash is thought to make you more susceptible to illnesses and diseases, while alkali ash is considered protective.

By choosing a variety of alkaline foods, you will be able to "alkalize" your body and improve your health.

Food ingredients leaving acidic ash include protein, phosphates, and sulfur, while alkaline components include calcium, magnesium, and potassium.

Certain food groups are considered to be acidic, alkaline or neutral:

• Acidic: Meat, poultry, fish, milk, eggs, cereals, alcohol

• Neutral: Natural fats, starches, and sugars

Alkaline : Fruits, nuts, legumes, and vegetables

When discussing an alkaline diet, it is important to understand pH.

The pH in the human body is calculated based on the pH table from 0 - 14, pH = 7 neutral, above 7 is alkaline, less than 7 is acid. A healthy pH is between 7.35 - 7.45. Australia's alkaline water filter is exactly the kind of water you expect.
